NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt Football Head Coach Bobby Johnson has named Troy co-defensive coordinator Rick Logo to fill a vacancy on the Commodore defensive staff.

Johnson said Logo, who mentored three current National Football League players during a four-year tenure at the southeast Alabama university, will coach Vanderbilt’s defensive line corps. He replaces David Turner, who joined the University of Alabama staff two weeks ago.

“I’m extremely pleased to announce that Rick Logo is joining the Commodore coaching staff,” Johnson said. “Vanderbilt is getting a proven coach who will strengthen our staff and a young man that is driven to succeed. Rick will definitely be an asset to this team.”

Last year, Logo served as co-defensive coordinator and defensive tackles coach for Larry Blakeney’s Trojan staff. Logo mentored Troy’s defensive line from 2002-2004, a tenure that culminated in the Trojans’ Silicon Valley Bowl appearance. Logo mentored three Trojan linemen who signed NFL contracts as a coach at Troy.

He joined Troy following one year at Western Carolina where he served as assistant head coach and defensive line coach. Before that, he worked seven years as a defensive assistant at Chattanooga.

A native of Santa Ana, Calif., Logo played four seasons as a defensive tackle at North Carolina State from 1989-92.  That Wolfpack staff guided by Dick Sheridan included three current Commodore coaches — assistant head coach Robbie Caldwell, offensive coordinator Ted Cain and quarterbacks coach Jimmy Kiser.

During Logo’s four seasons at N.C. State, the Wolfpack had a combined record of 32-16-1 and played in the Copper Bowl in 1989, the All-American Bowl in 1990, the Peach Bowl in 1991 and the Gator Bowl in 1992. Logo served as a team captain during his senior season and earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 1992. That same season, he was selected as a third-team All-America player and played in the Hula Bowl and the Japan All-Star Game.

After graduating from N.C. State in 1992 with a degree in sociology, Logo signed a free-agent contract with the Detroit Lions but suffered a career-ending injury during his first season.

Logo is a 1988 graduate of Spencer High School in Columbus, Ga., where he was a standout in football, wrestling and track and field. At Spencer, Logo earned all-state honors in his junior and senior seasons in football and received the Coca-Cola Award as senior, recognizing him as the city’s top high school football player.

Logo is married to the former Folole Falefia.
