TULSA, Okla. – In his first match of the ITA All-American Vanderbilt junior, Rhys Johnson, downed UC Santa Barbara’s Tobias Galskov in a hard fought match; coming out on top, 6-4,7-5.
“It was a good first match for Rhys (Johnson)”, said associate head coach Jamie Hunt. “He did some things really well. He served at a high level, and anytime you serve well it makes life a lot easier for you. I’m looking forward to seeing him build off today’s win.”
No. 90 Johnson takes on Arjun Kadhevout of Oklahoma State tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the second round of qualifiers. Kadhe defeated Micheal Tenzer of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 6-4, 7-5 to advance.
Winner of tomorrow’s match goes on to the third round of qualifiers to compete against either UTSA’s Tomas Stillman or No. 64 Dusty Boyer out of the University of Nebraska.
Johnson alongside doubles partner Gonzales Austin have their first match tomorrow in the qualifying doubles round as the No. 1 seed. The No. 22 team in the country squares off against Oklahoma State’s Nicolai Ferrigno and Lucas Gerch. For the Cowboys, Ferrigno went 6-0 in doubles competition last year, and Gerch 11-10.
Second round of singles qualifiers begins tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. First round doubles qualifiers begins Tuesday at 2 p.m., with second round tournament play beginning later in the day. All matches are played at Tulsa’s Case Tennis Center
