KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Rhys Johnson continued his strong fall play Sunday defeating Xavier’s Jimmy Roebker to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2013 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships.
Johnson was one of three Vanderbilt men’s tennis players in action on Sunday.
In the doubles quarterfinals, Kris Yee and Suresh Eswaran fell to Stiefelmeyer/Damrongsri of Louisville, 8-1.
Later in the day fifth-seeded Yee went up against Jarryd Chaplin of Tennessee. After losing the first set, Yee responded in the second set, winning 6-4. But it was Chaplin who would move on to the quarterfinals beating Yee in the third set 7-5.
Johnson, who has been playing great tennis all fall, showed once again what he is capable of. After knocking off sixth-seeded Pennington on Saturday, Johnson once again pulled the upset, this time beating ninth-seeded Jimmy Roebker of Xavier, 6-1, 6-2.
Singles quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Monday from the Goodfriend Center at the University of Tennessee.
