Joe Fisher’s Mailbag Submit Your Question Wondering about a player, a past game or another topic involving the Commodores? The Voice of the Commodores Joe Fisher will answer a variety of email questions from fans during the season on VUcommodores.com. |
Joe, I was wondering if you know what channel the Vandy vs. Connecticut game will be on here in Middle Tennessee this Saturday? All I see is that it’s on the “Big East Network.” Thanks!
— Derek Crawford (Columbia, Tenn.)
- Derek, in the Nashville area, the game will air on standard definition WUXP Channel 14, and in Hi Def on channel 236 (
more information). We certainly appreciate the folks over at Comcast and MyTV30 for making this happen. I do hope you’ll watch the game and listen to us on the Vanderbilt/ISP sports network.
Joe, a sweet taste of victory for the kids in Oxford. Winning breeds confidence and confidence breeds winning. Couple of questions: why does the offense not do more screens on these defenses that are so aggressive? And could you give the score a little more often on the broadcast because if you are listening on the radio in the car, it’s hard to keep up? Thanks.
— Bob (Lebanon, Tenn.)
- Your ability to run a successful screen depends on a number of things. I believe the staff is more comfortable with our offensive line now, so you may see more of that.
As for giving the score, I have to laugh a little. This is the one biggest complaints of fans across the country. I’ve chatted with many of my broadcasting brethren, and they all get the same statement. I will tell you that I try to give the score and set the table every two to three minutes.
Following our win at Ole Miss, it seems like most of our big conference wins over the last few years have occurred on the road. Do you have any thoughts on why this might be, and how can the team enjoy more success at home?
— Joe (Nashville, Tenn.)
- Honestly, sometimes its easier to be totally focused and motivated when its you against the world. We have a great, loyal fan base, just not a large one. The feeling of playing on a big stage, in front of 80 or 90 or 100 thousand people is certainly an eye opener. And having been through it, there’s not a much better feeling than quieting the other team’s home crowd, or even better, sending them home early.
Joe, When can we expect to see Jamie Graham back on the field?
— Mark (Nashville, Tenn.)
- Mark, I think there’s an excellent chance you’ll see him this week. And it will be a wonderful boost, as he can play corner, or nickel, or even in a dime package. It will give our defense much more flexibility.
I, like the majority of Vandy alums, don’t live within a day’s drive of Nashville so I can’t come to more than a game a year. Do the players know that their fans are much greater than what they see in Nashville? What can out of town fans do to let the team and coaches know that we are behind them and are really excited about how they are playing and the future of Vandy football?
— Ginger (Virginia)
- Ginger, I really appreciate your question. I hope that our players realize that they are part of a special thing; that they are not a neighborhood university, but a world-wide university. Being a
National Commodore Club member is a great place to start. It shows our athletes that they are appreciated and cared for around the world, and it keeps you in close contact with what’s going on. I would also suggest viewing parties in your area when we play. Stay active with our alumni association.
Keep me informed on when you’re doing special events in Virginia, so I can make sure our folks here in Nashville know. Our wonderful vice-chancellor David Williams says athletics is the front porch to the university. So, come onto the porch, knock on the door, and come on in!
