NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former University of Connecticut starting receiver Terence Jeffers is enrolled in classes at Vanderbilt and will join the Commodore football squad this season, Head Coach Bobby Johnson said today.
Jeffers, a 2005 graduate of Berkmar High School near Atlanta, Ga., is ineligible to play until the 2009 season. Expected to join the Commodores when preseason camp opens in late July, Jeffers has two years of eligibility remaining.
Jeffers enrolled recently for the second term of summer semester at the university.
“Terence has enrolled in classes on campus and will be a member of our football team,” Johnson said. “Terence wants to be a Commodore and has worked hard to join the team. I look forward to him being a great contributor on the practice field next season and a valuable player on Saturdays starting in 2009.”
Jeffers started every game for the Huskies in 2007 and 21 of 25 games during his two-year career. He helped UConn to a 9-4 overall record last year, a Big East Conference co-championship, and postseason berth in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte.
Jeffers topped all Connecticut receivers with 44 catches in 2007. He also was the team leader with 582 receiving yards and five touchdown catches. As a true freshman in 2006, Jeffers contributed 17 receptions, good for 200 yards and two touchdowns.
In high school, Jeffers was named Gwinnett County Wide Receiver of the Year by the Gwinnett Touchdown Club after catching 47 passes for 866 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior. He finished his prep career as Berkmar’s all-time leader. Jeffers also was instrumental in changing the fortunes of Berkmar football, helping the team to Georgia state playoff berths in 2004 and 2005 after an 0-10 record in 2002. He played in the Georgia North-South All-Star Game after his final season at Berkmar.
