NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The eighth-ranked Commodores jumped out to a fast start at the DICK’s Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup and are in second place on the team leader board with a team total of 564 (280-284). Junior Carson Jacobs leads all individuals after shooting an eight-under par, 134 (64-70) on the first day of play of the SEC-ACC formatted tournament.
Georgia Tech leads the tournament with a total of 562 (290-272).
“First of all, it was a fun and long day,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “In the first round, Carson played great and lifted our team up. I really thought he and Theo were solid all day. As a team, I really thought we competed well.”
Have a Day, Carson Jacobs
Jacobs, who has the tournament lead, fired a scorching seven-under par, 64, in the first round of the tournament in the morning, and then followed that with a one-under par, 70, in the second round. He has a two stroke lead on Georgia’s Lee McCoy.
Jacobs, from Hendersonville, posted six birdies and an eagle in his opening round, and then had five more birdies in his afternoon round. He has one individual title as a collegiate – that came at the Talis Park Challenge last season.
Dores Hold First-Round Lead
Vanderbilt jumped out to an early first-round lead after firing a four-under par, 280, and held a six stroke lead on the field. The Commodores fired an even-par 284 in their second round, but team-leading Georgia Tech carded a 12-under, 272, in the afternoon round to take a two-stroke lead into the final stroke-play round on Saturday.
Not Bad for a Freshman
Freshman Theo Humphrey is in a tie for eighth on the individual leader board after firing a two-under par, 140, in the opening two rounds. For the day, Humphrey poured in 11 birdies.
Commodore Scores
Other scores for Vanderbilt on Saturday included a one-over, 143 (73-70), from senior Hunter Stewart, a total of 147 (74-73) from senior Ben Fogler, and a 156 (78-78) from senior Jordan Janico.
Saturday’s Pairings
The Commodores will be paired with Virginia and Georgia Tech on Saturday beginning at 9:50 a.m. CT. SEC and ACC schools will be ranked and paired with each other on Sunday. If the tournament ended Friday, Vanderbilt would face the Yellow Jackets in an 18-hole match-play format.
“Tomorrow is a great opportunity for us and we need to embrace that,” said Limbaugh.
