Hofmann selected to NCAA Regional

May 18, 2011

Vanderbilt redshirt junior Adam Hofmann has been selected to compete as an individual at the NCAA East Regional in Radford, Va., at The Pete Dye River Course. Hofmann, from Pittsburgh, Pa., was Vanderbilt’s leading golfer this season with a 73.3 stroke average and an individual championship at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate to his credit.

Hofmann also posted two other top five finishes at the Mason Rudolph Championship, where he finished in a tie for fourth, and at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational, when he ended the tournament third out of 90 golfers. He also finished in a tie for 10th in the Commodores’ season opener at The Invitational at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island.

Hofmann missed the entire 2009-10 campaign due to injury.

“Adam is excited about the opportunity to compete for a national championship after a successful return to college golf following his wrist injury last year,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw. “The first step is at Virginia Tech and his game is in terrific shape. It should be a fun and exciting week.”

Thirteen teams and 10 individuals were selected to the East Regional, with the top five teams and the top individual not affiliated with those teams advancing to the NCAA Championship, which will be held May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla., where Oklahoma State will serve as the host.

This is Hofmann’s first appearance as an individual at an NCAA Regional, and Vanderbilt’s first since Jon Curran represented the Commodores in the 2008 NCAA Regional. The Commodores did not qualify as a team after falling short of reaching the head-to-head winning percentage of .500 or better required by the NCAA, breaking a string of two consecutive trips to postseason play.

The 54-hole regional tournament will take place May 19-21.
