South teams loses despite heroic effort of former VU attacker

Baltimore, Md. — Former Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse great Kate Hickman led the South squad with a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists in the second game of the 2006 STX Farewell Festival, held at Johns Hopkins on Saturday (June 10).

The Severna Park, Md., native had led Vanderbilt in goals and points scored for the past two seasons after helping the Commodore reach the NCAA national semifinals in 2004. Hickman earned her degree in May and has since received numerous postseason honors, including first-team All-American Lacrosse Conference and CoSIDA second-team Academic All-Region IV.

Below is a complete recap of the game provided by Chip Rogers of IWLCA:

The North team used a 6-0 run in the first half to tie the game at 7-7 and then used another one at the start of the second half to turn a 9-7 deficit into a 13-9 lead and held on for the 18-13 win in the second game of the Farewell Festival. The South’s Talia Shacklock (Loyola) led all players with eight draw controls and her teammate Kate Hickman (Vanderbilt) had four goals and three assists while the South keeper Ginger Miles (Virginia) made 11 saves, but the North had ten different players notch goals en route to the victory.

The North took the early lead on a goal from Boston University’s Mary Beth Miller, but the South answered with a 7-0 run that started as Hickman sandwiched a pair of goals around an assist to Shacklock to take a 3-1 lead. William & Mary’s Colleen Dalon then scored, won the draw control, and fed Hickman for a goal for a 5-1 lead. UMBC’s Kelly Fiorani and Shacklock both won the draw and assisted to Nikki Lieb (Virginia) and Katie Boyle (Virginia Tech) respectively to open up a 7-1 lead with 16 minutes to play in the second half.

The North responded with a 6-0- run of their own, starting with two goals around an assist to Sarah Albrecht (Northwestern) from Boston University’s Lindsey Lewis. Albrecht then scored her second goal before Abby VanDeusen (Connecticut) converted an Emily Cochran (Penn) feed and Penn State’s Lori Havrilla tied the game at 27:15.

Shacklock won the ensuing draw and Lieb scored 25 seconds after Havrilla to put the South back on top 8-7, and Shacklock again won the draw to give the South a key possession. She made the most of it, scoring off a pass from Hickman, to send the South into halftime with a 9-7 lead.

Fiorani won the opening draw of the second half for the South, but Albrecht started a 6-0 run for the North to help them take control of the game. Havrilla tied the game for a third time off an assist from Lewis, and after Kristen Blanchette (UNH) won the draw control for the North, VanDeusen’s second goal gave the North a lead they would not relinquish. Albrecht fed Lewis for an 11-9 lead, and Corey Leader (Temple) and Blanchette scored in succession to give the North a 13-9 lead just 12 minutes into the second half.

Shacklock again won the draw and the South got the ball to Hickman, who scored to stop the run, and Shacklock again gave the South possession with the ensuing draw control. Hickman fed Lieb to pull the South within one, and when William & Mary teammates La Nolan and Dalon hooked up for a goal at 48:36, the North lead was cut to one at 13-12.

Cornell’s Allison Schindler won the draw and the North worked the ball to Havrilla who scored right away to push the margin back to two at 14-12. Albrecht’s draw control and Katie Leland’s (UNH) goal gave the North a three goal lead, and Havrilla won the ensuing draw to give the North a key possession. Lindsey Munday (Northwestern) scored at 55:43 to put the North up 16-12, but Boyle won the draw and scored right off the possession to cut the margin to three less than 15 seconds later.

Albrecht won the draw and the North was able to hold on, as Cochran scored and then won the next draw control before Albrecht notched her fourth goal of the game, giving the North a clean sweep of the games at the 2006 STX Farewell Festival.
