ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Vanderbilt student-athletes Madiya Harriott and Haley Hopkins were named to the 2019 SEC Women’s Soccer Tournament Team, the league announced Monday.
Vanderbilt advanced to the semifinals of the tournament Thursday, but lost to eventual champions South Carolina, 2-0. Vanderbilt received a first-round bye in the tournament and the overall No. 2 seed after capturing the SEC East title.
Hopkins led the Commodores to a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals over Alabama (Nov. 5) with a two-goal performance.
Hopkins scored on a header off a corner kick and later led a fast-break goal beating an Alabama defender and the goalkeeper for her team-high 13th goal of the season. Her performance resulted in her eighth-career brace and her sixth game-winner of the season.
Hopkins’ sixth game-winner set a new Vanderbilt record, breaking her mark of five game-winners set in 2018.
Harriott didn’t spend a single minute on the bench throughout the SEC Tournament helping the Vanderbilt defense. She assisted on thwarting multiple scoring chances with key slide tackles in each game of the tournament.
The NCAA selection show is set for 3:30 p.m. CT today. Fans can view the live stream of the event at ncaa.com.
