NASHVILLE – Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Pasfield made 14 saves, but the Vanderbilt lacrosse team was unable to knock off No. 3 Florida Sunday as the Gators claimed an American Lacrosse Conference victory by a 21-10 tally.
The game went back and forth for much of the first half, featuring five ties and four lead changes. After the Gators got onto the board 70 seconds into the game, the Commodores answered just 22 seconds later when senior Carly Linthicum found freshman Ashlin Dolan for VU’s first goal.
In the fifth minute, junior Abby Wheeler scored off an assist from senior Courtney Kirk to give the ‘Dores a 2-1 advantage. But Florida’s Ashley Bruns would score two consecutive goals to help the Gators take the lead back. Dolan would once again have a quick answer for Vanderbilt, scoring her second off an assist from classmate Emma Dagres just 25 seconds later Bruns’ second tally.
Freshman Alexa Kunowsky gave Vanderbilt its second lead of the game in the 11th minute, scoring her 14th of the season on a free-position shot. After Bruns again tied the game, Dolan found Linthicum for another VU goal in the 15th minute.
After tying the game for the fifth time in the 18th minute, Florida reclaimed the lead when Brittany Dashiell netted her 24th of the year just 24 seconds later. The Gators would score four straight to stretch their lead to 9-6 before sophomore Meggie Ramzy got one back for VU on another assist from Linthicum.
After three more goals by the Gators, Vanderbilt scored the final two of the first half to cut the UF advantage to 11-8 at the break. Wheeler scored her 24th of the year with 2:47 to go in the first before Linthcium’s 48th went in at the 1:11 mark.
The Gators came out in the second half and grabbed the momentum back from Vanderbilt. Two goals from Gabi Wiegand, two more from Bruns and a tally by Nora Berry grew the Gator lead to 16-8.
Vanderbilt freshman Amanda Lockwood scored two in a row for the Commodores to cut into the Florida advantage, but her goals would be VU’s only tallies of the second half.
Pasfield made more 10 or more saves for the eighth time this season, narrowly missing her season high of 16 saves from a Feb. 20 matchup against Boston College. Pasfield entered the week ranked in the top 10 for saves per game in NCAA Division I.
With two goals and three assists, Linthicum led the Commodores in scoring. She has ranked in the nation’s top 10 in goals per game most of the season and needs seven goals to match VU’s single-season high of 55 goals set by Sarah Downing in 2009.
Defensively, the Commodores were led by two caused turnovers from Alex Duckenfield. Pasfield had a team-high four ground balls, with Duckenfield, Linthicium and senior Paige Cahill all picking up multiple ground balls. Kunowsky had four draw controls as the Commodores held an 18-15 advantage in the category.
The Commodores will finish out the 2013 regular season next weekend, playing host to No. 2 North Carolina on Saturday, April 20. Prior to the game, Vanderbilt will honor the five members of its graduating class of 2013: Linthicum, Pasfield, Paige Cahill, Courtney Kirk and Olivia Goodman.
