GAINESVILLE, Fla. — No. 19 Vanderbilt men’s tennis was unable to overcome the No. 21 ranked Florida Gators in a 4-1 defeat on Thursday from the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville.
The Commodores generated a ranked doubles win early on in the match, but could not translate the victory into momentum. The No. 20 duo of senior Nathan Cox and freshman Hoyoung Roh knocked off No. 8 Henry Jefferson and Tanapatt Nirundorn in a 7-6 (1) marathon at No. 1 doubles. It was the first top-10 win of the season for the black and gold across both singles and doubles play, and is the highest-ranked win of both Cox’s and Hoyoung’s careers. Despite evening the doubles score at 1-1, Vanderbilt (15-10, 4-8 SEC) dropped a heartbreaker at the second position to fall behind early 1-0.
Florida (13-10, 5-6 SEC) kept the ball rolling in singles play, racking up two straight wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to build a commanding 3-0 lead. No. 79 sophomore Pablo Martinez Gomez provided the Dores with some life from the top spot after a 7-6 (5), 6-1 takedown of No. 96 Adhithya Ganesan. It marked back-to-back ranked wins for Martinez Gomez, the second time he has accomplished that feat this season.
With multiple matches hanging in the balance, the Gators pulled out their fourth point at their No. 5 position in a tiebreaker. At the time of the clinch point, No. 88 Hoyoung held a third set lead over Lorenzo Claverie and junior Danil Panarin was on the brink of forcing a third set versus No. 81 Jeremy Jin.
No. 19 Vanderbilt prepares for its final road match of the regular season against No. 13 South Carolina (13-6, 6-5 SEC) on Saturday. For more information, updates and exclusive match day content, follow the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team, @VandyMTennis, on Instagram and X.
