Future Dore Jon Curran Places Fourth at Porter Cup

Vanderbilt incoming freshman golfer Jon Curran capped off a busy summer by placing fourth at the 47th Porter Cup, one of the top national amateur tournaments, which was held at the Niagara Falls Country Club.  Curran put together rounds of 78, 68, 67 and 67 to finish eight under, three strokes out of first place.

A recent graduate of Hopkinton High School in Hopkinton, Mass., Curran has played in six tournaments this summer in preparation for his collegiate debut this fall at Vanderbilt.  He turned in three top 12 finishes.

Curran opened up the summer by placing 30th at the Sunnehanna Invitational firing rounds of 73, 69, 71 and 73. Curran improved on that performance by placing 24th at the Monroe Invitational in New York. He shot 71, 72, 70 and 73 for the tournament.

At the Northeast Amateur, he shot 72, 71, 71 and 68 to take 46th place before heading to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. to take part in the Rice Planters Amateur, Curran carded a three-round total of 210 while shooting 70-70-71 (6-under par) to finish 11th.

He tied for ninth at The Player’s Amateur held at Belfair Country Club in Bluffton, S.C. Curran finished four-under par 284 before heading to the Porter Cup where he joined future Vanderbilt teammate Luke List. List placed 25th at the Porter Cup after finishing one-over par.

Curran captured the Division 2 individual state title last fall in Mass., in helping lead Hopkinton to its second straight team title. A three-time American Junior Golf Association All-American, he was named to the Rolex first team in 2004, the second team in 2003 and earned honorable mention in 2002.
