SEA ISLAND, Ga. – A quartet of Vanderbilt men’s golfers get one final warmup before kicking off the 2025 spring season in two weeks, as seniors Gordon Sargent, Jackson Van Paris, junior Wells Williams, and sophomore Chase Nevins are set to participate in the 2025 Jones Cup Invitational this Friday-Sunday at Ocean Forest Golf Club.
The group of Commodores head to Seas Island, Georgia, to play against some of the top amateur golfers in the world, as 43 of the top 100 amateurs will compete at the Jones Cup. The tournament, which began in 2001, is invite-only and granted at the discretion of the Jones Cup Committee.
It is a three-day, 54-hole individual stroke-play event played at Ocean Forest Golf Club. The tournament’s first two rounds will be held on Friday and Saturday, with both days teeing off between 8-10:10 a.m. CT. Sunday’s tees off between 7:30-9:40 a.m. CT. Sargent, Van Paris, and Williams each rank inside the top 40 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) coming into the Jones Cup. Sargent paces the trio, as he is currently the fifth-best amateur in the world. Van Paris is four spots behind him at No. 9, while Williams enters the event ranked No. 36 in the WAGR.
Dores On The Amateur Circuit
A total of five Commodores recently participated in amateur events in preparation for the upcoming 2025 spring collegiate season.
Both freshman Ryan Downes and sophomore Rowan Sullivan played at the 2024 South Beach International Amateur on Dec. 19-22. Downs finished tied for 16th after carding 9-under over four rounds of play. Sullivan carded even par through two rounds to miss the cut by a stroke.
Sophomore John Broderick went 2-under through three rounds to finish tied for 22nd at the 2024 Patriot All-America on Dec. 29-31. Freshman Bowen Ballis participated at the 2024 Agave Amateur in Indio, California, while junior Ben Loomis opened his 2025 at the New Year’s Invitational in St. Petersburg, Florida.
