Four Commodores named All-ALC

April 28, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Senior Cara Giordano headlined a group of four Commodores that earned All-American Lacrosse Conference honors Tuesday when the league announced its postseason awards.

Giordano was one of only three players to be named a first-team all-conference selection for the second consecutive season. Joining Giordano on the ALC’s first team were VU juniors Sarah Downing and Alex Mundy. Freshman Ally Carey was recognized as a second-team All-ALC performer.

A midfielder from Moorestown, N.J., Giordano joins 2008 graduates Sasha Cielak and Margie Curran as the only Commodores to earn All-ALC honors in four straight seasons. Giordano currently stands seventh on Vanderbilt’s all-time scoring list with 98 career goals.

Downing, an attacker from Morristown, N.J., has led the Commodores in goals (46), assists (21) and points (67) this season. With 96 career goals, Downing also has a chance to reach 100 career goals in this week’s ALC Tournament.

A defender from Ellicott City, Md., Mundy leads the Commodores in both caused turnovers (21) and ground balls (35) this season.

Carey has had an outstanding freshman campaign for the Commodores. The Bel Air, Md., native ranks second on the team in assists (19) and points (45).

With three honorees on the league’s first team, the Commodores trailed only top-ranked Northwestern on the 12-person team. Ohio State boasted two honorees, with Penn State and Johns Hopkins each having one.

Vanderbilt will open the 2009 ALC Tournament this Thursday, April 30, against Johns Hopkins, at 2 p.m. CT. The three-day tournament will be hosted by Penn State University on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons.
