Four Commodores are Academic All-District 11/7/2005 Four members of the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team have been voted to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team, it has been announced. It marks the most representatives Vanderbilt has placed on this honor team. The foursome is headed by first-team selection Monica Buff. The Lilburn, Ga., junior has a 3.70 grade point average in economics and has been one of the defensive stars on a Commodore team that set an SEC record with 14 regular season shutouts this fall. Buff was the SEC “Defensive Player of the Week” this season and has also been honored last year as All-Central Region third team along with the SEC All-Tournament team. As a freshman she was on the SEC all-freshman team. Buff has been academic all-SEC and a member of Vanderbilt’s Dean’s List. By making the district first-team, she goes on the national ballot for academic All-America honors. The award is sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America, whose members do the voting. The Commodore placed three on the academic second team. They include goalkeeper Tyler Griffin along with fellow defenders Kari Boersma and Lauren Mitchell. Griffin, a native of Charlotte, N.C., sports a 3.55 grade point in economics and was just this week voted the Southeastern Conference “Defensive Player of the Year.” Boersma (Littleton, Colo.), a member of the SEC’s Good Works team for outstanding community service, has a 3.53 grade point in economics and mathematics while Mitchell, of Millersville, Md., carries a 3.37 in computer engineering.
