Former Vandy Star Earns Spot in Third Career Grand Slam

Ex-Commodore Bobby Reynolds qualified for the third Grand Slam of his young career, netting a first round match in the singles draw of the 2005 Australian Open Championship tomorrow.

Reynolds took down three opponents in the qualifying matches to earn his first trip into the main draw in Melbourne.

College tennis’ No. 1-ranked player in 2003, Reynolds is slated to face Nicolas Almagro of Spain.  The Australian Open will be Almagro’s second career Grand Slam with his first coming at the courts of Roland Garros at the French in 2004.

The match is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 18 (Monday, 7 p.m. CT), with the winner taking on either Olivier Mutis of France or 17th seed Andrei Pavel of Romania.

Reynolds’ entrance in the main draw marks the former Commodore’s first trip to Melbourne, and his third Grand Slam appearance overall.  In his first career appearance, Reynolds played his way to the second round of the 2003 U.S. Open.  His second showing also came at the U.S. Open in 2004 where he fell in the first round of play.

At Vanderbilt, Reynolds became the men’s tennis program’s most decorated player.  He owns the school record for wins in a career with 99, as well as the program’s highest winning percentage in a career at 73.9%.

The two-time All-American led the Commodores to the NCAA national championship match, the highest showing in the history of the program.
