Football Preseason Camp Report- 8/7/06

8/7/2006

Quarterback Chris Nickson

On Campus in Nashville (Day 4)

Immediately after putting his Commodores to a lengthy workout Monday night, Head Coach Bobby Johnson was eagerly anticipating the team’s next practice.

On Tuesday, the Commodores move into full pads for the first time this preseason. Johnson said he likes how the squad is practicing as it prepares for full contact.

“Our guys are working extremely hard, doing everything we are asking of them to get better,” Johnson said. “The (Monday) practice was very similar to the previous two in terms of effort and concentration. Now, we get to see our guys in full pads and see how they respond. I think they’ll come out ready to work hard and ready to show that they can contribute to making this a better football team.”

On Monday, Johnson put the Commodores through a session very similar to the previous three practices, focusing on individual fundamentals and team teaching. Nearly an hour of the session involved limited contact during one-on-one, seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills.

Through the first week of practice, Johnson’s staff has spent extra time trying to bring the squad’s newcomers up to speed with the Commodore playbook. “Getting the younger people up to speed is one of the most important tasks in the opening days of camp,” Johnson said. “We might need some of some guys to help us this year and we’re trying to bring them along as quickly as possible.”

Big News in Anderson Household
Sophomore receiver Bryant Anderson learned Monday that his father is about to become one of the National Football League’s highest ranking officers.

Outgoing NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced Monday that Bryant’s dad, Ray Anderson, will become the league’s new Senior Vice President of Football Operations, replacing Art Shell, who left the position to become head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Anderson’s area of responsibility will include all NFL operations, including officiating and NFL Europe.

The elder Anderson formerly served four years as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Atlanta Falcons. In 2003, he was named to Sports Illustrated’s list of the “101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports.”

Brown Gets First Work of Camp
Ray Brown, a senior expected to compete for a starting role at defensive tackle, participated in his first preseason practice after missing the first three sessions due to a family matter.

Two other Commodores, receiver Earl Bennett and safety Reshard Langford, sat out the practice with leg strains. The status of both players is day-to-day, Johnson said.

Upcoming Practice Schedule
The Commodores will practice each evening through Friday, then start two-a-day drills on Saturday before taking their first day off from preseason camp Sunday for Dore Jam V. Starting today, all Commodore practices are closed to the public.

Dore Jam V – Sunday
The team’s official Fan Day activity, Dore Jam V, offers a great chance for Commodore fans to meet their favorite Vanderbilt student-athletes. The free event is scheduled this Sunday, from 4-6 p.m., at the John Rich Practice Complex.

Besides getting autographs and talking with favorite Commodore football players, young Vanderbilt fans can try their hands at other Vanderbilt varsity sports, including golf, baseball, bowling and likely track and field activities. Athletes and coaches from several Commodore squads are expected to participate.

Kids visiting the event have plenty of free entertainment options, from an inflatable Bounce House and Giant Slide to receiving special Commodore hats.

Besides the kids attractions, visitors can register for an opportunity to win various prizes, from an authentic Commodore jersey to a signed football by Coach Johnson. A Commodore team poster featuring the 2006 football schedule will be given free to all in attendance. Free hot dogs and soft drinks also will be provided to the first 1,000 patrons.

Fans attending Dore Jam V can also purchase the SEC’s lowest season ticket offer, starting at $80 per person, and the 2006 Vanderbilt Football Media Guide at the event. The guide costs $15.

Vanderbilt season tickets, the least expensive in the Southeastern Conference, are available for the six home games. Packages start at $80. The Commodore home opener is against Arkansas on Sept. 16.
