Andrew East, a versatile linebacker/long snapper from Indianapolis, has signed to play for the Vanderbilt Commodores, Head Coach Bobby Johnson said Monday.
East, a three-year starter for North Central High School, will join the Commodores when preseason camp starts this August.
“We’re pleased to have Andrew joining our football team and participating this season,” Johnson said. “We think Andrew is an excellent linebacker prospect and possesses the ability to become an accomplished long snapper. He’s also an outstanding student in the classroom.”
The 6-2, 220-pound East started at linebacker as a sophomore and junior before moving to defensive end for his final season. As a senior, he contributed 64 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and an interception as North Central went 3-8 in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, regarded as one of the nation’s most competitive prep leagues.
An All-MIC defensive end in 2009, East also was named to play in the postseason Indiana North-South All-Star Classic.
As a junior, East contributed more than 100 tackles playing inside linebacker for the Panthers.
East served as the team’s primary long snapper for three seasons, earning the team’s special team player of the week on numerous occasions.
East is also an Indiana Academic All-State recipient for his classroom achievements.
