EATONTON, Ga. – The No. 11/10-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team had five golfers card under par in Round 1 of the Linger Longer Invitational, as the Commodores concluded their first go-around at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee at 10-under 278 to end Friday tied for fourth on the team leaderboard.
A trio of Dores carded 3-under 69 in Round 1 of the Linger Longer Invitational, as sophomore Ryan Downes, along with freshmen Michael Riebe and Jon Ed Steed, each ended the day tied for 13th. Senior Wells Williams and freshman Will Hartman both concluded the round at 1-under 71, as a total of five Commodores finished the day under par.
“It was good to see Will play well in his first round in the lineup, also, I thought Jon Ed and Ryan were really solid and in control all day,” said Thomas F. Roush, M.D., and Family Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Head Coach Scott Limbaugh. “Michael did a great job finishing strong and finding a way. Wells played great today. He hit a bad shot on 16 and got a tough break. We know he will be there for us over the weekend.”
Vanderbilt heads into Saturday’s second round tied with Alabama for fourth place on the team leaderboard. The Commodores hold an 18-hole score of 10-under 278. Friday’s team scored tied for the fourth-lowest single-round score vs. par this season.
“I was proud of the way we came out ready to play this morning, and we really played well most of the round, which was great to see,” Limbaugh stated. “However, we didn’t finish the way we wanted to, and I know that’s disappointing for the guys. The course was very scorable today, and we scored well for most of the day, but we have to keep training ourselves to stay locked in the entire round.”
Georgia holds a 10-stroke lead over the field at the end of Day 1at the Linger Longer Invitational, as the Bulldogs hold a score of 21-under 267. Vanderbilt heads into Round 2 just one stroke behind second place, which is currently occupied by Mercer and Ohio State. Grayson Wood of Georgia leads the field by a stroke on the player leaderboard, as he carded 7-under 65 on Friday.
The Commodores tee off Round 2 on Saturday, starting at 8:15 a.m. CT. Fans can click the link here to follow along with live scoring.
