CARLSBAD, Calif. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team had five golfers selected to the NCAA Division I PING All-Southeast Region team, as announced on Saturday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Graduate students William Moll and Matthew Riedel, senior Cole Sherwood, and juniors Gordon Sargent and Jackson Van Paris were each selected to the NCAA Division I All-Southeast Region team. The five GCAA All-Region selections are the most in a single season in program history.
Sherwood becomes just the second Commodore ever to earn four GCAA All-Region selections. He joins Patrick Martin (2016-19) as the only pair of Vanderbilt golfers to accomplish the feat. The senior from Austin, Texas, is having a spectacular final season in the black and gold, as he came into this week’s NCAA Men’s Golf Championships holding a stroke average of 69.88 through 11 tournaments. The All-American won the 2023 Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in October to claim his third career collegiate win. Sherwood has collected four top-five finishes and placed inside the top 10 seven times this season. The senior is currently No. 8 in the PGA Tour University rankings, while he is 18th in the CLIPPD rankings.
This marks the third-straight season Sargent has been named to the GCAA All-Southeast Region team. The junior is also up for the 2024 Haskins Award, while he was a finalist for the 2024 Ben Hogan Award. Currently, Sargent is ranked No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and seventh in the CLIPPD rankings. He has posted five top-five finishes during the 2023-24 season and holds a scoring average of 69.80 through 10 collegiate tournaments. The 2022 NCAA national champion closed the 2023-24 regular season by winning the Mason Rudolph Championship for the second-straight year. The victory at the 2024 Mason Rudolph extended Sargent’s program record for all-time wins to six.
Moll and Riedel earned their second-straight GCAA All-Southeast Region selection, while it is the third of their Vanderbilt career as the Houston, Texas, natives were All-Region selections in 2021.
Moll has posted five top-10 finishes this season and recently became the first Commodore to win an NCAA Regional, as was the individual medalist at the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional. He holds a scoring average of 70.78 this season and has carded under par in 18 rounds. Moll’s victory at the West Lafayette Regional propelled him to No. 6 in the PGA Tour U. rankings heading into the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship.
Riedel has had a stellar 2023-24 campaign, holding a team-best scoring average of 69.72 through 11 tournaments. The 2024 Haskins Award finalist tied for second in stroke play at the 2024 SEC Championship, as he carded 6-under 204. The All-American also posted a runner-up finish at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational and has collected seven top-10 finishes this season. In addition, Riedel has placed inside the top five at four tournaments. The graduate student is currently No. 4 in the PGA Tour U. rankings and is 14th in the CLIPPD rankings.
Van Paris’ breakout campaign earned him the first GCAA All-Region selection. The Pinehurst, North Carolina, native scored his first collegiate victory at the 2023 St Andrews Links Collegiate, winning stroke play with a two-round total of 9-under 131. The junior made his PGA Tour debut at the 2024 Puerto Rico Open in March, finishing in a tie for 10th.
