No. 3-seeded Vanderbilt carded 2-under 278 in Round 1 of the 2025 NCAA Amherst Regional

AMHERST, Va. – The No. 3-seed Vanderbilt men’s golf team completed its first round of play at the 2025 NCAA Amherst Regional at 2-under 278 on Sunday at Poplar Grove Golf Club.

Round 1 of the NCAA Amherst Regional was moved up to Sunday after the morning practice round due to inclement weather in this week’s forecast. The Commodores were one of four schools to card under par on Sunday, as Vanderbilt heads into Round 2 at 2-under 278.

Senior Jackson Van Paris and sophomore Chase Nevins paced the Dores on the elongated opening day of the tournament. Each golfer carded under par in Round 1, as Van Paris finished the day at 3-under 67 while Nevins went 1-under 69.

“It was a long day, but I’m proud of how our guys withstood it to get the first round in,” said Thomas F. Roush, M.D., and Family Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Head Coach Scott Limbaugh. “I felt like Jackson played great today and finished off with a great birdie on 18. It was big for us to watch that one go in.

“I thought as a team, we got off to a fine start. We had all five guys in it for most of the day. I saw a lot of good things today. It was a great round by Chase. He got us some momentum early. Overall, we’ve got to control the things we can control. There are some things that we can clean up. We’ve got to stay positive within ourselves and continue to play with purpose and conviction.”

Van Paris, who recently earned All-SEC second team honors, concluded the day at 3-under 67. The Pinehurst, North Carolina, native collected four birdies on Sunday. The All-American closed Round 1 with a birdie on Hole 18, which put him at 3-under going into Monday.

Nevins, playing in his first NCAA Regional event, went 1-under 69 in Round 1. The sophomore collected a team-best six birdies during his first go-around the course at Poplar Grove Golf Club.

Freshman Ryan Downes, also making his NCAA Regional debut this week, finished at even par on Sunday.

The Commodores were one of six teams to complete Round 1 on Sunday, as play was suspended due to darkness with seven teams and multiple individuals still out on the course. Tennessee leads the field at the end of 18 holes, as the Volunteers finished at 9-under 271.

Play resumes at the 2025 NCAA Amherst Regional on Monday at 6:30 a.m. CT with Round 2 scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. CT. All tee times are tentative and subject to change.

“I think we knew there needed to be a sense of urgency to get off to a fast start,” added Limbaugh. “I thought for this team to be able to roll from the practice round into Round 1 was a good thing. We got out on the course and got going. We’ve got to see what the week brings. Whenever it’s time to play, we’ve got to be ready.”
