BIG EAST Release

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Vanderbilt attacker Emily Mathewson was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for her performance against Villanova, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. She joins Julie Blaze (Feb. 14), Kayla Peterson (Feb. 28), and Jill Doherty (March 14) as the fourth Commodore to earn BIG EAST honors this season.

The Garnet Valley, Pa. native had a homecoming game against the Wildcats and made the most of it. She started her second-consecutive game and scored a career-high five goals and dished out three assists in Vanderbilt’s 14-12 comeback win over Villanova.

The ‘Dores faced a five goal deficit in the second half and Mathewson scored two straight goals during a 5-0 Vanderbilt run to tie the game at 9 with 20 minutes remaining. The ‘Dores would face a three-goal deficit later in the half but it was Mathewson who would step again. She assisted on Julie Blaze’s goal that brought the ‘Dores within one and then had the helper on MacKenzie Lange’s go-ahead goal that would seal the win for the Commodores.

Mathewson’s five goals ties for the most by a freshman in a game this season in the BIG EAST. She is the first Commodore to earn Freshman of the Week honors since Kayla Peterson did it in back-to-back weeks in March of 2015.

The ‘Dores will be back in action tomorrow as they hit the road for their final non-conference game of the season. They will face No. 17 Johns Hopkins Wednesday at 12 pm CT.
