Emil Named Men’s Golf Assistant Coach

6/30/2006 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Former Southern Miss standout Justin Emil will join the Vanderbilt men’s golf staff as an assistant coach, Head Coach Tom Shaw announced Saturday.

“Justin fits our needs perfectly,” Shaw said. “He is a first-class individual and will be a wonderful representative of Vanderbilt University. Justin was one of the most accomplished golfers in Southern Miss history and, after receiving his Masters degree, has become a well-respected head golf professional in the Gulf States PGA Section.

“He is eager to work with the team and relate his experiences as a successful student-athlete and golf professional,” Shaw added. “We are lucky to have him on board.”

At the University of Southern Mississippi, Emil was a four- year letterwinner. He earned Conference USA Freshman of the Year honors in 2000, and was named second-team All-Conference following his senior season in 2003. Emil qualified for the United State Amateur Championships in 2002 (Oakland Hills) and 2003 (Oakmont).

A native of Gulfport, Miss., Emil earned his bachelor’s degree in sports administration from Southern Miss in 2002. He continued his education at Southern Miss, earning a master’s degree in sports management in 2004 while working with the Golden Eagles’ golf team as a graduate assistant.

Following his time in Hattiesburg, Emil worked as a golf professional and won the 2005 Gulf State Section Apprentice/Assistants Championship.
