NASHVILLE – The Vanderbilt lacrosse team found itself in a hole early and was unable to overcome second-ranked North Carolina, falling 20-5 Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams.
Prior to the game, Vanderbilt honored the five members of its graduating senior class. But the game’s first half belonged to North Carolina. The Tar Heels opened the scoring just 69 seconds when Brittney Coppa scored her first of three goals on the day.
North Carolina would net the game’s first 12 goals, holding the Commodores scoreless until the 27th minute of play. With 3:11 remaining in the half, Senior Carly Linthicum connected on her 49th goal of the season to get the Commodores on the board. Linthicum has totaled 99 points in her VU career and has scored 30 percent of the Commodores’ goals this season.
Vanderbilt found a few more offensive chances in the second half of play. In the 49th minute, freshman Mallory Schonk scored her 23rd goal of the year. The ‘Dores would put together a three-goal run later in the half, with freshman Emma Dagres scoring twice–once off an assist from classmate Amanda Lockwood–and senior Courtney Kirk finding the back of the net off a free position shot. Kirk has 91 career points and stands ninth on Vanderbilt’s all-time assists chart.
Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Pasfield made 12 stops in the Commodore net to close out the regular season with 152 saves. Defensively, junior Brandi Byner, sophomore Alex Duckenfield and Dagres were each credited with two ground balls.
North Carolina was led by three goals and four assists from Kara Cannizzaro. The Tar Heels held a 16-11 advantage in draw controls thanks to four draws by Jessica Griffin.
Vanderbilt will have 12 days before their next game, kicking off the 2013 American Lacrosse Conference Tournament on Thursday, May 2, at Homewood Field in Baltimore, Md. The seedings for the ALC Tournament will be available this week.
