Junior Sarah Downing led a group of four Commodores that were recently lauded by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).
Downing earned first-team All-America honors, while senior Cara Giordano and junior Alex Mundy were both named to the third team. Freshman Ally Carey was recognized on the All-West/Midwest Region second team.
Downing set school records this season with 55 goals and 81 points. She joins 2004 graduate Michelle Allen and 2008 graduate Sasha Cielak as the third Commodore to earn first-team All-America honors under Head Coach Cathy Swezey.
Giordano closed out her stellar career with a total of 101 goals as a four-year All-American Lacrosse Conference honoree. Her senior class graduated won an average of 10 games per year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons.
Mundy was a standout for the Commodores’ young defensive line all season. She led the team with 43 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers while starting all 17 games.
Carey had an outstanding freshman season in the Commodore midfield. She was second on the team in assists and points, and led the squad with a record 61 draw controls — good for eighth nationally.
Vanderbilt made its fifth overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament this season before Notre Dame avenged a regular season defeat by beating the Commodores in South Bend. The Commodores ranked in the nation’s Top 10 in scoring offense and draw controls this year.
The IWLCA and US Lacrosse honored 48 student-athletes in Division I with a selection on one of the All-American teams. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the National All-Americans at an awards banquet on June 13, 2009 in King of Prussia, Pa.
