Doubleheader Split

No. 13 men's tennis falls 5-2 to No. 18 Auburn, rebounds with 4-0 victory over Xavier

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 13 ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team split its doubleheader on Friday, falling 5-2 to No. 18 Auburn before shutting out Xavier 4-0 at the Lummis Family Tennis Center.

Against the Tigers, the Dores got started early in doubles play, notching wins at their No. 1 and No. 3 positions to secure the opening point. This included a 6-3 win from No. 49 senior Nathan Cox and freshman Hoyoung Roh over No. 25 Billy and Freddy Blaydes, marking the Commodore duo’s second doubles victory over a top-25 opponent. Vanderbilt (13-5, 4-3 SEC) looked to have full control of the momentum after taking four first set leads and only needing three points. However, Auburn (14-2, 4-1 SEC) would not go away, eventually working back deficits at Courts 2, 3 and 6. The Tigers ultimately finished off the comeback, clinching a 5-2 win over the black and gold. Auburn generated responses in three of the four matches that went Vanderbilt’s way after the first set.

The Commodores looked for a rebound to follow, welcoming Xavier (6-9, 1-1 Big East) to Nashville for the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Vanderbilt again started strong, securing the doubles point after taking victories at its top and bottom spots. The Dores did not let up against the Musketeers, stringing together wins at No. 1, 2 and 5 singles to put the match away. Sophomore Callum Markowitz earned his first singles win since Feb. 15, downing Lukas Grossman 6-1, 6-1 on Court 5.

Vanderbilt gets a week-long break before hosting No. 3 Texas on March 20. The match kicks off the program’s alumni weekend, which concludes with a matchup against No. 12 Georgia on March 22.
