NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt men’s basketball team earned a bid to the NIT, it was announced Sunday by the organization’s selection committee.
Vanderbilt (17-16), the No. 4 seed in its quarter of the bracket, will take on Belmont (25-7) in the Commodores’ opening contest of the event at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Gymnasium. The game will air live on ESPN2.
“We are excited about the opportunity to continue our season in the NIT,” Vanderbilt head coach Jerry Stackhouse said. “Our players have competed at a high level throughout the season and we are thankful that the selection committee has extended an invitation to our program. We are looking forward to more games together on the court starting Tuesday in Memorial.”
Tickets will be available for purchase beginning Monday morning through the Vanderbilt Athletics ticket office and online. Tickets for reserved seating in Sections A-E, Section F and Section L are $20 and general admission tickets are $15. Students will be able to claim tickets for $5, with seating in Sections G-K.
Fans are no longer required to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to enter Memorial Gymnasium. Vanderbilt also no longer requires masking indoors, aligning with the CDC’s recent COVID-19 community level guidance.
This will mark the 28th postseason action for the program – 15 NCAA Tournaments, 13 NIT appearances. The Dores are 30-27 all time in postseason play, with a 10-16 mark in the NCAA Tournament and a 20-11 record in the NIT.
Vandy’s most recent NIT appearance came in 2015 when the Dores made a run to the quarterfinals. The stretch included a road win at Saint Mary’s and a home victory against South Dakota State before falling at Stanford.
The Commodores were in action was last week at the SEC Tournament in Tampa, Florida, where they took down Georgia and Alabama en route to a quarterfinals appearance before falling to Kentucky.
Vanderbilt is the only SEC program to improve its NCAA NET ranking in each of the last three seasons. The Commodores’ 17 wins are the most for the program since putting up 19 in 2016-17.
