NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s swim team wrapped up its final home meet of the 2013-14 season, splitting with Liberty University and the University of West Florida. Prior to the meet the Commodores honored the teams five seniors: Margaux Georgiadis, Melissa Roberts, Alyxandra Vernon, Michelle Williamson and Rebecca Young.
The Commodores defeated the first-year West Florida program, 203-57, while falling to Liberty 140-121. The battle with Liberty came down to the final race of the day, with the Commodores ultimately improving from their loss to the Flames earlier this season.
Vanderbilt finished the day with six first-place finishes, two of which coming from Chrissy Oberg. The junior took the top spot in both the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes, with times of 56.69 and 2:01.69.
Freshmen Alexandra Blankenburg and Carrie Bencic also each picked up wins against Liberty and West Florida. Blakenburg took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.79, while also finishing second in the 400 IM. Bencic took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 5:02.51. She also finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.26.
Hannah Martin and Elly Faulkner had the last two top finishes for the Commodores in the 100 freestyle and 400 IM, respectively. Faulkner also finished second in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes.
The 200 medley senior relay team of Vernon, Young, Roberts and Georgiadis finished with a time of 1:53.50, while the 200 free senior relay team of Vernon, Williamson, Young and Georgiadis finished at a time of 1:44.34.
Vanderbilt will now look ahead to next weekend, when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky., for a matchup with Western Kentucky, Cumberland and Marshall.
