Gabby Fornia breaks Vanderbilt career points record

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt dominated the fourth quarter on Saturday to earn a 19-12 win over East Carolina at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.

Fifth-year senior Gabby Fornia took control in the final 15 minutes, totaling six of her seven points in the period as the Commodores pulled away late.

Fornia’s fourth goal and seventh point with a minute left moved her atop Vanderbilt’s all-time points list with 245, passing Margie Curran (2005-08). Fornia now owns the program record for single-game and career points along with single-game, season, and career assists.

Bri Gross put the Dores on the board just 52 seconds into the game and the Commodores never trailed.

East Carolina pulled even at 5-5 early in the second quarter but Vanderbilt regained the lead and took a 9-7 advantage into halftime.

The Pirates held Vanderbilt to one goal in the third quarter to send the game to the final 15 minutes even at 10-10. The Commodores exploded for nine goals in the fourth quarter, outscoring East Carolina 9-2.

Fornia and Maddie Souza led the team with four goals each. Gross finished with three goals.

Vanderbilt moves to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Commodores host No. 10 Florida at 11:30 a.m. CT on Saturday with action airing live on YouTube.
