Soccer comes back to seal regular season finale win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – RV/20 Vanderbilt soccer posted a 3-1 comeback victory over Alabama in the 2024 regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Vanderbilt improves to 9-2-6 (4-2-4) behind goals from Ella Eggleston, Caroline Betts and Courtney Jones.

Vandy’s nine regular-season wins mark the eighth season under head coach Darren Ambrose that the Dores have registered at least nine wins. During the regular season, Vanderbilt gave up only 10 goals to opponents in the regular season, the fewest since 2005.

After a scoreless first half, Alabama broke open the gate off a goal from Gianna Paul in the 47th minute. Eggleston responded in the 51st minute with the equalizer.

Eggleston forced pressure on Alabama’s Kierson McDonald who passed it back to their keeper Ellie Lanyi but Eggleston continued the chase and intercepted it from Lanyi to knock it in for the tying score.

Bett’s sixth goal of the season came in the 79th minute, splitting two defenders to find the back of the net just passed Lanyi’s hand to give Vandy a 2-1 lead.

Vandy’s final goal of the day came from a downfield pass from Eggleston to Jones. Eggleston stripped back possession to find Jones on the right flank. Jones shot far side for the score to seal a victory for the Commodores.

Vanderbilt’s victory secures its spot in the SEC Tournament. The Dores await their opponent based on the final regular season results across the league.
