NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fresh off its first win of the 2012-13 season, the Vanderbilt women’s swimming team is ready for the Western Kentucky Invitational, which runs Thursday through Saturday (Nov. 15-17) in Bowling 
Green, Ky.
The Western Kentucky Invitational is an annual event the Commodores have participated in since the swimming program was reinstated in 2006. The final meet of the fall season is a three-day invite that includes prelims and finals and is similar to what Vanderbilt will see at the SEC Championships.
“Having a three-day invite with prelims and finals all three days will really helps us prepare for the SEC Championships,” said Vanderbilt head coach Jeremy Organ. “Having to race well in the morning and then come back at night for finals and go faster is something we don’t get to do often.”
Last weekend Coach Organ’s squad recorded its first win of the season at Marshall (163-124). As a team, the Commodores won a total of nine races last Saturday.
Jenn Mann continued her already impressive freshman campaign as she broke the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.15. The previous record was 1:04.03. Mann has now won the 100 breast in all dual meets so far this season.
To begin the day of competition, Vanderbilt’s relay team of Mann, Chrissy Oberg, Rebecca Young and Caroline Thomas won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:49.19. Coming in second, was Vanderbilt’s other relay team of Alexis Mayhall, Elly Faulkner, Lauren Torres and Hannah Martin (1:50.58).
In the 200 freestyle, Vanderbilt placed first and second led by Torres with a time of 1:55.43 and then followed by Faulkner (1:57.12).
Thomas registered a win in the 100 backstroke in a time of 59.93, followed by Mayhall (1:00.11) and Chelsea Morey (1:01.38).
Freshman Hannah Martin recorded two wins on the day, as she won the 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke. In the 50 free, she won with a time of 24.99, while she finished the 200 back in a time of 2:07.16.
Swimming the 100 butterfly for the first time this season, Oberg recorded a first-place finish with a time of 58.13. Torres came in second as she was barely out-touched by Oberg in a time of 58.22.
Vanderbilt then finished the meet the same way it started, with a win in a relay event. In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Thomas, Morey, Erika Deardorf and Betsy Galenti won with a time of 1:41.46.
Vanderbilt returns to the Centennial Sportsplex after nearly two months off from competition, as the Commodores host Evansville Jan. 12, in the first meet of the 2013 calendar year.
