Sept. 1, 2016
The Vanderbilt men’s golf team opens its 2016-17 season this weekend at the world-renown Pebble Beach Golf Links with seven other teams at the sixth annual Carmel Cup on California’s Monterrey Peninsula. Action gets underway Friday morning at 7:00 a.m. Pacific time.
The Commodores, who return four starters from last season’s team which advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second consecutive season, will compete with Ohio State, TCU, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Texas Tech in this year’s competition. The teams will play all three rounds at Pebble Beach, which will be set up as a par-72, 6,828-yard format.
Play will take place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with tee times beginning at 7:10 a.m. Pacific each day. Six golfers will compete, with the top five scores being counted each day.
Vanderbilt, ranked number five in the preseason by Gulfweek, will send senior Matthias Schwab, juniors Theo Humphrey and Michael Decker, sophomores Will Gordon and Patrick Martin, and freshman John Augenstein to California for the three-day event.
“The start of a season always brings new energy and enthusiasm for the unknown and what lies ahead,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh, who is entering his fifth season on West End. “For me that is so exciting! I love the climb and I love the group that we have here right now. Early on they have shown that this team really matters to them. We have to look forward and embrace the journey that is in front of us.”
Besides Vanderbilt, Oklahoma State (4), Georgia (9), Oklahoma (10), and Arkansas (20) enter the season ranked in the Golfweek preseason poll.
“Once again, we have the opportunity to begin our journey at Pebble Beach, which is such an awesome place,” said Limbaugh. “We are so thankful to everyone that makes this happen for our guys.”
