GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Vanderbilt Lacrosse team kicked off BIG EAST play Saturday afternoon, with a tough 16-2 setback against the second ranked Florida Gators. With the loss the Commodores are 4-6 this season, and 0-1 in conference play.
“It was a rough day for us,” said head coach Cathy Swezey. “When you’re playing the No. 2 team in the country, you have to execute almost perfectly, and our attack had an off day. To our defense’s and goalie’s credit, they kept things in check for us as long as they could.”
The Gators’ fast paced offence three goals in six minutes to give UF the 3-0 advantage, before Jill Doherty connected to Kelly Chandler for a goal. With Chandler’s goal was the redshirt-junior’s 25th this season.
Florida earned seven draw controls to VU’s three. The draw combines with the UF’s 100% clear percentage gave the Gators the 8-1 lead heading into the locker room.
History repeated itself again in the second half, as the Florida earned three goals, two of which were free position, before Commodores freshman, Julie Blaze could earn his third goal for the black and gold unassisted. The Commodores took command in the draw control in the second half (7-3), with Margaret Fee earning three on the day.
The Gators earned five additional goals before the game was over. Vandy goalie, Callahan Kent earned the loss, but had another double-digit save game with 13 to her name.
The Commodores return home for their next conference match, hosting Georgetown April 2nd at 1:00 pm.
