Dores Named National Team Of The Week Again

Vanderbilt defeated No. 1 Alabama Saturday at FirstBank Stadium

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For the second time this season, Vanderbilt football has been named the Cheez-It National Team of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America.

For Week 6, Clark Lea’s Commodores earn the nod thanks to a 40-35 victory over No. 1/2 Alabama Saturday at FirstBank Stadium.

The win marked Vanderbilt’s first win over a top-ranked team, as well as any opponent ranked in the top five of the Associated Press poll. The Commodores had been 0-10 against the nation’s No. 1 team and 0-60 against the AP top-five.

In addition, it was Vanderbilt’s first win over Alabama since 1984 and its first win over the Tide in Nashville since 1969.

Vanderbilt becomes the first team to be named Team of the Week by the FWAA twice in the same season since 2005 and just the third since the inception of the award. South Carolina was named Team of the Week twice in 2005 after wins over Tennessee and Florida, while Miami (Fla.) won it twice in 2002 following victories over Florida and Florida State.

The Commodores return to action Saturday at Kentucky. Kickoff is set for 6:45 p.m. CT/7:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network and 94.9 The Fan.
