PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Vanderbilt senior Hunter Stewart maintained his individual lead at the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach, and the Commodores climbed three places on the team leader board to fifth place after posting a seven-under par, 353, in their second round on Saturday. Stewart carded a two-under par, 70, on the day, while junior Carson Jacobs led all Commodore golfers with a five-under, 67, on Saturday. Senior Jordan Janico also had a good day, posting a four-under par, 68.
Stewart holds a two-stroke lead on Clement Sordet of Texas Tech and Caleb Sturgeon of South Carolina. Janico moved up 15 spots on the individual leader board and is in eighth position heading into the final round, while Jacobs vaulted 30 places to a tie for ninth. Stewart, Jacobs, and Janico combined for 15 birdies in their respective rounds Saturday.
“Carson and Jordan did a great job lifting the team up today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Hunter was steady all day and made a great birdie on 18. He’s doing a great job managing his game and his emotions.”
The Commodores are in fifth place and trail fourth-place South Carolina by three shots with a team score of 717 (364-353). Georgia leads the team standings and is at 10-under par, 710, for the tournament and holds a one-shot lead on second-place TCU.
“The guys did a good job today and had the right competitive character that we want to have,” said Limbaugh. “Every player is battling for every shot and being excited about having the opportunity to play a championship course. We played our way back Into contention today doing the small things right and playing Vanderbilt golf. Tomorrow is just another opportunity for us to build off of that.”
The third and final round of the Carmel Cup will take place at Pebble Beach on Sunday.
