The Commodores will open their fourth season of the Scott Limbaugh era this Friday through Sunday at the Pebble Beach Golf Links with the fifth annual Carmel Cup. For the second consecutive year in the five-year history of the event, all three rounds will be played at Pebble Beach, one of the world’s most famous and recognizable golf tracks.
The tournament will be a 54-hole stroke play event with six golfers counting five.
“There truly is not a more special place to begin the year than Pebble Beach,” said Limbaugh. “It’s one of the best courses in the world that has hosted some of the greatest events the game of golf has to offer. We are so fortunate to have this opportunity and the guys are so excited.”
Vanderbilt, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2015 NCAA Championship and ended the season ranked fourth according to Golfstat.com, their highest ranking in the history of the program, returns four starters from last year’s team.
Competing with the Commodores this weekend is Texas Tech, Arkansas, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and TCU. Vanderbilt and Texas Tech, the original two participants in the Carmel Cup, will serve as co-hosts. Six of the eight teams advanced to the NCAA Championship a year ago, with the Commodores and Bulldogs each advancing to match play.
Vanderbilt will send seniors Carson Jacobs and Zack Jaworski, junior Matthias Schwab, sophomore Theo Humphrey, and freshmen Will Gordon and Patrick Martin to compete in the event.
Pebble Beach, located on the Monterrey Peninsula in Northern California, is the yearly host to a PGA Tour event, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am, and has played host to five U.S. Opens and four U.S. Amateurs.
All eight teams will begin the Carmel Cup Friday morning, with 18 holes being played each day on Pebble Beach on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. First tee times begin at 7:10 a.m. PT each day and live scoring can be found on golfstat.com throughout the weekend.
“I think that the most important thing for this group is to see how the youth of the team develops and to see where the leadership for this group will come from,” said Limbaugh. “We look forward to that process beginning with this group this week.”
