ORLANDO, Fla. – The #15-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team surged into the team lead at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in Orlando after firing a nine-under par, 279, on Monday in the second round of action. For the tournament, the Commodores have a team score of 550 (271-279), two strokes better than second-place Florida State. Junior Carson Jacobs also has the individual lead by three shots after shooting a second-round 65 at the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club on Monday, and has a total of 11-under par, 133 (68-65) for the event.

The Commodores have two other players in the top seven, with senior Hunter Stewart in a tie for fifth with a score of 137 (65-72) and freshman Theo Humphrey in a tie for seventh with a total of 138 (69-69). Senior Ben Fogler was Vanderbilt’s final counting score on Monday with a one-over, 73, and he is currently in a tie for 23rd on the individual leader board.

The Tavistock Collegiate is one of the nation’s toughest tournaments, with nine of the top 30 teams in the country participating, and four of the top 10.

“We wanted to come out today with same focus and energy and the guys certainly did that,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “The goal was to win the day and we knew we would have an opportunity to win the tournament.”

Notes on the Round
– Jacobs’ 65 on Monday was a new career low as he chases his second career individual championship. As a sophomore, Jacobs won the Talis Park Challenge in Naples, Fla.

– Jacobs finished his last 10 holes at seven-under par, and leads a trio of Texas Tech players by three shots for the overall individual lead.

– The Commodores, who counted a combined 23 birdies on Sunday in the first round, counted 17 on Monday and an eagle from Jacobs on the ninth hole.

– Vanderbilt leads an impressive field, but even more so with the teams directly behind them. Second-place Florida State is ranked seventh in the nation, third-place Texas Tech 10th, and fourth-place Illinois first.

“Theo has been really steady the entire week,” said Limbaugh. “Obviously, Carson playing his last 10 holes in 7-under was a huge boost for our team.”
