STATESBORO, Ga. – The fifth-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team blistered the Forest Heights Country Club course on Friday in the first round of the Schenkel Invitational and lead all teams after carding a 15-under par, 273, and lead second-place Auburn by one shot heading into play on Saturday. Sophomore Matthias Schwab paced the Commodore effort with a first-round 67 and is in a tie for second on the individual leader board.

Schwab’s 67 was a shot better than teammates Theo Humphrey and Carson Jacobs, who carded a first-round 68 and are in a tie for fourth. Hunter Stewart was the other Vanderbilt counter Friday with a two-under, 70, and is in a tie for 17th. Ben Fogler shot a first-round 72, while Zach Herr, who is playing as an individual, carded a first-round 68.

“Today was another step in the right direction for our team,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “It was a solid start and seeing all five guys in it the entire round was big for us. I am really proud of the entire team and the competitive character they continue to show. Today’s round was a complete team effort. We have another opportunity tomorrow to continue to try and be the best version of us we can be.”

Auburn’s Ben Schlottman leads all individuals after shooting a six-under par, 66, with Schwab and Cyrus Stewart of Wake Forest one stroke back.

The final 36 holes of the tournament will be played on Saturday. Originally scheduled for 18 holes, Saturday’s play was extended to 36 holes due to inclement weather expected for Sunday.
