SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team fired a first-round team score of 295 in the first round of the San Antonio Regional, and currently sit in ninth in the team standings at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course. Charlie Ewing, Hunter Stewart, and Ben Fogler each carded a first-round 73 to lead the Commodores on Thursday.

The top five teams and the top individual not affiliated with a qualifying team from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, which takes place May 23 through May 28 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.

“We talked last night about getting off to a good start on the back nine and we were able to do that,” said Commodore head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We really did and we had a lot of momentum early. I think that holes 17,18, and 1 we lost quite a bit in that stretch, but we were able to move through it after that. We made some birdies and weren’t able to finish off the round, which was a little disappointing, but we’re really close to playing great golf.”

The Commodores also counted a 76 from Carson Jacobs and Jordan Janico.

Georgia leads the team standings after shooting a first-round 281, four strokes in front of second-place College of Charleston. Julien Brun of TCU and Bryson Dechambeau of SMU lead all individuals after each carded a first-round 67.

“It’s a three round fight, and no one won the fight after the first round,” said Limbaugh. “We just need to come out tomorrow and understand what the day is and that tomorrow will be a great opportunity for us. We just need to embrace that.”

The second round continues on Friday in San Antonio.
