The 14th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s golf team is in second place after two rounds of the Central District Invitational in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., with a two-round total of 13-under par, 563 (276-287) in an event hosted by Michigan State University. The Commodores trail first-place UCF by two strokes and lead third-place Michigan State by three strokes heading into the third and final round on Tuesday.

Vanderbilt played its first round on Monday morning in stellar fashion, finishing with a 12-under par, 276, and followed the morning’s festivities with a one-under par, 287. The Commodores were 23-under par through the first 29 holes at the Lakewood Ranch-Cypress Course.

Commodore freshman Simin Feng led all Commodores in the first day of play with an eight-under par, 136, which is good for second place on the individual leader board.

“Twenty-three under through the first 29 holes is so dang impressive,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “I really couldn’t be happier with them. It was fun to watch them play again after a long layoff. I saw so many positive things out there today, and I’m looking forward to seeing them tee it up tomorrow in contention for a championship.”

Besides Feng, three other Vanderbilt players are in the top 20 in the individual standings. Junior Kendall Martindale is in a tie for 11th with a two-under par, 142 (69-73), sophomore Jennifer Hahn is in a tie for 14th after carding a 143 (68-75), and junior Irina Gabasa is in a tie for 18th after firing an even-par, 144 (74-70). Freshman Antonia Scherer also had a solid first day of play, posting a 148 (72-76, T-33) in her opening two rounds. Sophomore Morgan Ransom played as an individual and finished the day with a 150 (79-71, T-43).

UCF’s Fanny Cnops leads all individuals with a 10-under par, 134. Feng is two strokes back of Cnops.
