The Vanderbilt women’s golf team began their own Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship with a bang on Friday, ending the first round of play with a one-over par, 289, and in a tie for second place with UCLA on the team leader board. The Commodores trail first place Arizona State by four strokes heading into the second round on Saturday.
“I’m really proud of the girls with their finish,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “They made some birdies coming down the stretch and that’s what you have to do on holes 7, 8, and 9. I’m pleased with where we stand, but there is a lot of golf to be played. The golf course is in unbelievable shape and the greens are so pure right now.”
The Commodores steadied the Legends North Course on Friday, carding and counting three even-par 72’s from junior Kendall Martindale, sophomore Jenny Hahn, and freshman Simin Feng, and then counted their final score of 73 from sophomore Morgan Ransom. Junior Irina Gabasa also shot a first-round 77 for Vanderbilt.
The trio at even par are in a tie for 14th in the individual standings, with Ransom in a tie for 30th, and Gabasa in a tie for 60th.
The Commodores also played six individuals on Friday, with senior Rene Sobolewski leading the way with an even-par 72. Lauren Johnson and Katie Rose Higgins each shot a five-over par, 77, Antonia Scherer fired a 79, Kate Sborov an 80, and Kimberly Koehler a 90.
On the individual leader board, Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow and Baylor’s Hayley Davis are tied for the lead after shooting a four-under par, 68. Both hold a one-stroke lead over Augusta James of N.C. State.
The second round of the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship continues on Saturday.
