NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 2-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team will be the top seed in the West Lafayette Regional, as the Commodores begin their NCAA postseason run May 13-15 at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
The Commodores learned of their NCAA Regional destination Wednesday during the NCAA postseason selection show on GOLF Channel. They are one of 13 squads selected to play on the Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana, in hopes of advancing to the NCAA Championships on May 24-29 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa North Course in Carlsbad, California. The Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex was the site of the 2008 NCAA Championship.
“I am proud of our guys for earning the No. 1 seed at the West Lafayette Regional,” said Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh. “That’s a big accomplishment and says a lot about the consistency these guys have played with. The NCAA tournament has a lot of different steps to take, and you can’t skip any of them mentally. Our complete focus will be on preparing the right way and taking each step as they come. Each step must be done together, and it has to be done with toughness.
“I was fortunate to have coached at this course during the 2008 NCAA Championship, so I’m very excited about this opportunity for our guys. We must be a team that is relentlessly pursuing what we want.”
It is the third-straight season that Vanderbilt has earned a No. 1 seed at an NCAA Regional site, while it is the program’s seventh overall.
Vandy heads to the West Lafayette Regional ranked No. 2 in the nation according to the CLIPPD rankings, while the Commodores came in at No. 3 in the latest Bushnell/GOLFWEEK Coaches Poll. The 54-hole tournament tees off May 13, with teams playing one 18-hole round per day. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship.
Other teams competing at the West Lafayette Regional are Arizona, Florida, New Mexico, Purdue, San Diego State, Mississippi State, Indiana, College of Charleston, Stetson, Colorado State, Southern Illinois, and Tennessee Tech. Individuals playing at the West Lafayette Regional are Caleb VanArragon (Valparaiso), Hunter Thompson (Michigan), Cameron Huss (Wisconsin), Barend Botha (Toledo), Valentin Peugnet (Illinois State), Owen Stamper (Middle Tennessee State), Alex McCulla (Illinois State), Luke Fuller (Western Kentucky), and Ben Ortwein (Rider).
The Commodores posted a runner-up finish last year at the Auburn Regional, though Vandy has captured first place at two of its last three NCAA Regionals. Vanderbilt has advanced out of the NCAA Regional round in each of the last nine seasons. Overall, the Commodores have moved on to play in the NCAA Championship a total of 12 times.
Vanderbilt is coming off a fourth-straight finals appearance at the SEC Championships on April 28. They finished third in stroke play before falling to Auburn, 3-2, in the championship match.
It’s been another mile-marker campaign for the Commodores during the 2023-24 season. Vanderbilt has tied the program’s single-season record for most wins in a season with six, as the Dores won the Valero Texas Collegiate, Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational, St Andrews Links Collegiate, Pauma Valley Invitational, and the Mason Rudolph Championship.
