NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team picked up three victories Saturday, sweeping Tennessee State twice and capping the day with an additional 7-0 victory over the Austin Peay Governors.
With the three wins Vanderbilt improves to 7-2 overall and 6-0 at home inside the Currey Tennis Center.
Several Commodores made their 2018 dual match debuts with Vikram Chari, Lachlan McPhee, Alex Ross and Adam Sraberg all earning their first victories of the season for the black and gold. Vanderbilt also experimented with doubles teams which proved advantageous as the Dores clinched the doubles point in all three performances and granted players additional match experience.
In singles, the Commodores came out on top of every competition for straight set victories. Two separate student-athletes clinched Vandy’s three victories on Saturday.
Maxwell Freeman handed the Commodores their final win in VU’s first matchup against TSU. The freshman earned his first victory while playing on court two, only allowing Shashank Nautiyal one game. In their second competition versus the Tigers, Panu Virtanen delivered Tennessee State the final punch on court four in a 6-0, 6-4 win over Stefan Koruga.
Against Austin Peay, the Commodores reverted to their usual singles lineup as of late, with No. 44 Cameron Klinger at No. 1 singles and No. 50 Daniel Valent playing at No. 2 singles. Both student-athletes only allowed a combined three games between the two courts. Freeman clinched his second match of the day on court five, downing Jacob Lorino 6-1, 6-2 to seal the Vanderbilt victory.
The Commodores will take a break from dual match play next weekend and resume competition on the road on Feb. 23rd at Northwestern. For updates and a behind the scenes look at the program, follow @Vandymenstennis on Twitter.
