BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Vanderbilt women’s swimming team placed second at the Hilltopper Invitational, which concluded on Sunday, November 20.

Vanderbilt’s score of 1,333 trailed only Western Kentucky’s 1,648.5. Evansville placed third with a score of 1,104, Arkansas-Little Rock was fourth with a final of 353 and the University of the Cumberlands’ 291.5 points were good for fifth.

The final day of action saw the Commodores score wins in two events.

Caroline Thomas took home a victory in the 100 freestyle. Her mark of 51.58 edged Western Kentucky’s Georgia Smith by less than half a second.

The second victory came in the meet’s final individual event, as Lauren Torres took the 200 butterfly finals wiht a time of 2:05.90.

Vanderbilt took the first three positions in the 200 butterfly, as Elizabeth Freeman was right behind Torres with a mark of 2:07.35, while Chrissy Oberg placed third, posting a time of 2:07.08.

Other highlights included Erika Deardorf placing third in the 1650 freestyle. Deardorf, who holds the pool record at WKU’s Powell Natatorium from a 2009 swim, posted a mark of 17:17.29.

Oberg then placed third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.81, while Amy Salce was right behind her with a mark of 2:05.78 that was good for fourth.

In addition to Thomas’ victory in the 100 free, the Commodores took the “B” final behind Torres’ time of 52.86.

The victory by Torres in the 200 butterfly was supplemented by Alyxandra Vernon winning the “B” final in the same event.

The meet was then concluded by the Commodores taking second in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Thomas, Melissa Roberts, Chelsea Morey and Torres posted a mark of 3:31.94

While the Commodores do not compete again until after the new year begins, it will be a familiar foe, as they will travel to Evansville, Ind., to take on the same Purple Aces they just edged for a second place finish. The meet on Saturday, January 14, is set for 1:00 p.m. CT.
