ATLANTA, Ga. – The Vanderbilt swim team capped of its final day at the Georgia Tech Invitational placing fifth out of 17 teams, tallying a total of 449 points. Fellow SEC institution, Florida, came in first place with 1359 points, Arkansas followed in second with a 497.5 point margin. In third place, Florida State garnered 686 points. Florida Gulf Coast came in ahead of the Commodores with 573.5 total points.
In the first event of Saturday’s finals, sophomore Kathryn Babbin and freshman Bailey Bowden generated points for the Commodores placing 12th (17:05.05) and 14th (17:18:66) respectively in the 1650-yard freestyle.
Senior Chrissy Oberg swam the first Top-10 time of the day, placing sixth in the 200 backstroke prelims at a time of 1:58.15. Oberg improved during her finals swim, maintaining sixth place, but at a faster time of 1:57.53.
In the 100-yard freestyle, junior Hannah Martin secured points for VU with a 14th place finish, swimming in with a time of 50.59.
During the 200-yard breaststroke prelims, Kara Lucenti placed eighth with a time of 2:16.73. In Saturday night’s finals swim the freshman improved her time and placement, coming in at seventh place for the `Dores at a time of 2:15.87.
Vandy’s success in the pool continued with back-to-back placements in the 200 butterfly. Coming off Friday’s record-breaking success in the 100-yard butterfly, freshman Breanna Sapienza swam into eighth place (2:02.28) in the 200. Rachel Koch made strides for the Commodores as well, following Sapienza with a ninth place finish (2:02.83).
In the final event of the invitational, the 400 free relay team of Hannah Martin, Summer Brown, Carolina Thomas, and Kayla Moran secured an eighth place with a time of 3:27.18.
The Commodores have over a month long hiatus from competition, jumping back in their home pool against the Kentucky Wildcats on Jan. 9.
