GAINESVILLE, Fla. -The fifth-ranked Commodores ended their first spring tournament of the season in sixth place after posting a three-round total of 869 (293-290-286) at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. Senior Hunter Stewart led the way for Vanderbilt, firing a one-over par, 211 (68-72-71), which tied him for eighth on the individual leader board. The finish was Stewart’s fourth top 10 of the season and 19th of his career.
South Florida won the tournament with a total of 835 (275-283-277), and the Bulls’ Claudio Correa claimed medalist honors with a five-under par, 205 (65-73-67).
“I thought the guys really competed better today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “It wasn’t as much about score as it was about us showing up at a higher level today than we did yesterday. I thought we didn’t do the simple things as good as we needed to in order to play well this week. We have a lot of golf ahead of us and we will challenge ourselves to improve physically and mentally so we can be better next time out than we were this week. I know our guys will embrace that.”
Commodore freshman Theo Humphrey had the low round of the day, shooting an even-par 70. Vanderbilt also counted a 71 from Stewart, a 72 from Carson Jacobs, and a 73 from Matthias Schwab, who returned to the course this weekend for the first time since the spring of 2014 because of injury.
Vanderbilt returns to the course Querencia Cabo Intercollegiate March 1-3.
“We have a week and a half before we return to action,” said Limbaugh. “We are looking forward to getting back to work, doing the simple things well, and learning from our mistakes.”
