NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Denver Jones led all scorers as top-ranked Auburn defeated Vanderbilt 80-68 on Tuesday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 15-0 lead in the opening minutes of the contest before Jason Edwards was able to get the offense moving. The Dores scored 28 points in the last 10 minutes of the first half to go into the break trailing by just two, 36-34. Vandy and Auburn traded baskets to open the final frame but the Tigers pushed an 11-2 run to retake their final lead of the night.
Vanderbilt (17-7, 5-6 SEC) was led by Edwards who scored 13 points and grabbed three rebounds. The junior has scored in double figures in every game except one this season and 54-of-58 career games at the Division I level. Devin McGlockton added 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the year.
Freshman Tyler Tanner finished with two steals, tying Wade Baldwin (2014-15) for most steals during a rookie season with 50. Tanner is now just six steals away from entering the top 10 single season steals list at Vandy.
Auburn (22-2,10-1 SEC) was led by Jones’ 21 points off 7-of-10 from the field and Chaney Johnson who posted 20 points off 9-of-10 shooting. Johni Broome added 17 points for the Tigers with a team-high seven rebounds.
The Commodores travel to No. 5 Tennessee on Saturday. Tipoff is slated for noon CT and can be seen on SEC Network.
