NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt Commodores (2-2) looked for the early season upset when No. 10 USC (3-0) traveled to Memorial Gym Sunday evening. The Commodores upset bid fell short as the Trojans pulled away in overtime to win 93-89.
Vanderbilt battled from the opening tip and built a 13-point lead in the first half after a hot start from the floor. Matthew Fisher-Davis scored 10 points in the first half and the Dores shot 13-for-22 (59%) from the field. Vanderbilt looked to take a lead into the break but the Trojans finished the half on a 15-0 run to take a one-point lead into halftime at 35-34.
The second half was a back and forth affair as neither team built more than a 10-point lead. The Commodores had the largest second half lead at 62-52 with 9:37 remaining but the Trojans closed quickly and it came down to the final few minutes.
Two Chimezie Metu free throws tied the game at 75 with 1:16 left. Riley LaChance followed it up with a three-point play to give the Dores a three-point lead. After the team’s exchanged baskets, Jordan McLaughlin hit a three to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Trojans scored the first seven points and it was too much for the Commodores to overcome. McLaughlin set a new career high with 35 points on the night while Fisher-Davis scored a season-high 31 points.
