Dores fall to Gamecocks, Pirates

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Vanderbilt swimming team fell to a pair competitors in a two-day dual meet, hosted by South Carolina. The Commodores fell to the Gamecocks, 187-122, while also falling to East Carolina, 214-114.

Day two was highlighted by Oberg’s second win of the event, as she took the 100 yard backstroke with a mark of 57.63. She won the 200 yard backstroke on day one.

Saturday’s action opened with the 200 yard medley relay, which saw the Commodore group of Oberg, Laura Dillon, Lauren Torres and Caroline Thomas place fourth with a time of 1:50.01. Less than two seconds separated first through fourth place.

Michelle Williamson was Vanderblit’s top finisher in the 1650 yard freestyle, posting a time 17:44.72. Margaret Freeman was right behind Williamson in fourth with a mark of 17:47.53.

The 50 yard freestyle saw Thomas post the best Commodore time, finishing in 24.58, just .51 seconds behind the winner.

That was followed by Oberg’s win in the 100 yard backstroke. The Commodores concluded the meet with a string of narrow second place finishes.

The 200 yard breaststroke saw Commodores in second and third. Dillon placed second with a time of 2:23.92, just ahead of Elly Faulkner who posted a time of 2:26.04.

Oberg put together another solid performance in the 100 yard butterfly, posting a mark of 58.30 which was just .03 seconds out of first place.

The Commodores finished second in the next event, as well, with Thomas posting a mark of 1:55.49 that was .27 behind the winner.

Then the 400 yard individual medley saw Faulkner finish just 2.1 seconds out of first with a time of 4:35.05 that was good for second. Vanderbilt swimmers were also in third and fourth, as Erkia Deardorf swam a time of 4:35.80 and Dillon finished with a mark of 4:37.63.

Commodore relay teams capped the meet with second and third place finishes in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Torres, Sarah Lynch, Melissa Roberts and Thmas posted a time of 3:35.63. They were closely followed by Deardorf, Margaux Georgiadis, Oberg and Chelsey Morey and their time of 3:40.76.

Vanderbilt will be back in action next weekend with a swing through the Natural State. The Commodores will swim at Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday, February 3, at 3:00 p.m. before moving on to Fayetteville to swim against SEC foe Arkansas on Saturday, February 4, at 1:00 p.m.
