NORFOLK, Va. – Brianna Menella lifted top-seeded James Madison over fourth-seeded Vanderbilt in 16-6 decision in the American Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals on Thursday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
James Madison came out firing, taking an early 4-0 lead until Jackie Norsworthy found Nancy Halleron to get Vandy on the board with four minutes remaining in the opening period. The Dores scored two more before the Dukes tallied four unanswered and took a 9-4 lead into halftime. Olivia Matthews registered a third-quarter hat trick as JMU held Vandy scoreless in the third period. James Madison added three more in the fourth to build its final advantage.
Vanderbilt (9-9) was led by Brooke Baker who scored twice, while Jaime Biskup added a goal and an assist. Maddie Barkate, Cate Bradley and Nancy Halleron also scored for the Dores. Sophomore Alex Gladding picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers. In cage, Molly Joyce made eight stops.
James Madison (13-4) was led by Maddie Epke and Mennella who combined for five points. Mennella posted four goals while Epke, Matthews and Savannah Derey registered hat tricks.
